Susan Adeline Rainwater Lewellen

Susan Adeline Rainwater was born in Arkansas on 4 September 1859, the last of the twelve children of Matthew Rainwater and Mahala Snapp. The family had lived in Tennessee, Illinois and Arkansas, but starting with her brother John in the 1860s, many of Susan’s siblings migrated to Texas.

On 26 October 1881, Susan married James B. Lewellen in Bell County, Texas. Two of her sisters, Mary Eveline and Margaret Elizabeth, had also married members of the Lewellen family. All three families settled in the rolling farmlands of Bell County.

Susan and James Lewellen had at least eight children: Ida B., born Aug 1882; Levi, born Jun 1884; William L., born Mar 1886; Carina, born Feb 1888; Walter A., born Jun 1889; Almira, born Nov 1892; Cordia, born Sep 1895; and Rufus D., born Feb 1899.

The family is found in 1900 living in Bosque Co., Texas where James ran a blacksmith’s shop. They lived in Haskell Co., Texas in 1910, and by 1920, the family had moved to Scurry Co., Texas.

Susan Rainwater Lewellen died on 6 Jun 1929 and is buried in Snyder Cemetery, Scurry Co., Texas. James died on 17 Aug 1937 and is buried in Antioch Cemetery, Cass Co., Texas.
